When you can count both SOPHIE and Cashmere Cat as collaborators, you must be doing something right. Through these, as well as her own forward-thinking sounds, Australian newcomer Kota Banks has positioned herself firmly within the world of hyper-futuristic pop.
Having spent her formative years in Italy, where she took opera lessons as a kid, Kota Banks has since moved back to Aus, honing a style that serves to empower as well as sound like pop 2.0.
‘BIG BUCKS’, which we’re premiering below, sees Banks wrapping luxe, breathy harmonies around a steely instrumental produced by fellow Aussie and longtime collaborator Swick.
Signed to Nina Las Vegas’s NLV Records, Kota Banks describes the track as “both a commentary and satire on capitalism and 21st century greed, and me grappling with and acknowledging that I’m part of the problem.”
“’BIG BUCKS’ is a daydream I had whilst in London about living luxe, wearing designer brands and staying in nice hotels,” she adds. “The lyrics are quite exaggerated, and so in a sense it’s also intended as a commentary on how when this daydream becomes a reality it can be dangerous.”
It follows ’20 Missed Calls’ and her Swick-produced ‘PRIZE’ mixtape, and you can tune in exclusively below.
