Pheo - California Sex

Being a Moreno Valley, LA native, it’s only natural that his music is sweltry and laid back, and, being in the game for 10 years has allowed rapper Pheo to establish his own style and empire, starting with his black on the outside, green on the the inside label Avocado Everything. ‘California Sex’ sees the 25 year old team up with DJA and offer up the release for free via Diplo’s Los Angeles label Mad Decent as part of their free weekly release project.

Opener Drop hits abruptly with a deep bass and speedy rhymes about fighting off groupies, while the production on the rest of the EP is a lot more washed out and relaxing. It’s almost as if the first track’s hip-hop-anthemic tone is simply bravado or front, and although enjoyable nonetheless, the languid and warm effortlessness we experience throughout the next four tracks is what’s real and true. The stealth of Pheo’s flow is sustained throughout, but as the beat slows and leaves behind free space, in its place weave dainty melodies and slender, wavy synthesizer. Overall a great EP for the summer.
