Mike Will’s ‘Est. in 1989 Pt. 2’ is a bruising statement of intent from one of the best, arguably the best, producer in rap today. Blending a low-end sensibility with an ear for the majestic his work, ranging from puffy twerk songs to tense theremin-led bangers and ballads, has been dominating contemporary hip-hop and continues to develop into beguiling new forms.
Compiling hits with the likes of Gucci Mane, Future and 2 Chainz and introducing gems like the electric organ drenched 773 Love with Jeremih, his second mixtape is essential listening. The interludes, opening with Diddy at his ridiculous best and closing with a message from the legendary Mannie Fresh, are very bold but with features and a catalogue as rich as this Mike Will is right to believe he really has made it.
