Leicester-born, GRAMMY-nominated R&B star Mahalia has released her popping new single ‘Roadside’ with British rap sensation AJ Tracey, and a corresponding music video starring the singer in front of a burger van, alongside AJ Tracey, with whom she smashes up a Mercedes Benz using a baseball bat. A message to the heartbreakers – the single comes after eighteen months of self development, when during the uncertainty of the pandemic, Mahalia’s writing became more self-reflective, which she hopes will allow her listeners some time for reflection too.
She says, “We’re all fixated on how we can make ourselves better during and after this period of time but I want people to also reminisce on lovely or painful situations they’ve lived through and how they’ve helped shape the people they are now.”
Mahalia was recently nominated for her first Ivor Novello award with fellow Midlands rapper Pa Salieu for his single ‘Energy’. On her recent collaboration with AJ Tracey, she says, “I’ve kinda been excited about releasing this one since I started writing it. Fresh out of a breakup, I made this with The Elements and two of my favourite girls and songwriters Abby (Absolutely) and Kamille. We had so much fun writing and making this together. Getting AJ on it was the cherry on top for me. I’ve wanted to work with him forever and I was so happy that it could be on this tune. I hope you love it!”
She’ll headline a show on November 19th at the O2 Brixton Academy, buy tickets here.
