Over the last few years, New Zealand's Eddie Johnston has cultivated a cult following online for the greyscale Casiotone RnB and rap covers and insightful melody-led indie rock songs he records and performs as Lontalius.
When he isn't working on his Lontalius project, Johnston makes club music informed by R&B, house, techno and footwork as Race Banyon. While spending some time in Los Angeles last year, Johnston locked in at the Red Bull Sound Select studios for a writing session with Ty Dolla $ign and Drake/Kendrick Lamar producer DJ Dahi. One of the key fruits of their labour was What Are We Doing. Built around a stargazed clockwork beat, the song utilizes a tastefully minimalist production touch to buoy Ty's hypnotic croon and conflicted musings on intimacy and isolation.
What Are We Doing is the first of two tracks scheduled to appear on Johnston's forthcoming new Race Banyon digital EP, due for release via Red Bull Sound Select on Feb 26.
