Since 2008, Los Angeles-based singer and producer Nite Jewel (Ramona Gonzalez) has taken her R&B informed dance music from hazy lo-fi home recordings to sleek and expansive hi-def synth-pop, all the while holding onto a sense of genuine yearning. After recently working with languid Bay Area rapper/producer Droop-E on a sultry group EP as AMTHYST, Nite Jewel is currently readying a new album 'Liquid Cool', set for release on June 10 through her Gloriette label.
In advance of this, she's shared a new single titled Boo Hoo. Exemplifying her shift from lo-fi to hi-def, Boo Hoo is an all-enveloping blend of strutting drum machine funk, spiralling arpeggiated synths, misty late night atmospherics, and Nite Jewel's crystalline vocal melodies. Heard together, it adds up to an affecting and memorable entry point into an album she has described as exploring the theme of loneliness in a crowded and disconnected world.
