Joy Orbison stamps his sound across Jorja Smith's 'Rose Rouge' with UK garage remix

Joy Orbison is back with a brand new remix of Jorja Smith’s 2020 single ‘Rose Rouge’, marking his first release since collaborating with London duo Overmono on ‘Blind Date’ last month.

Jorja Smith originally released the single as part of the first ‘Blue Note Re:imagined’ album, a collaborative project uniting some of the jazz scene’s most exciting young talents to pay homage to the greats of the past. Bridging the gap between the past and present, Smith turned in a modern rendition of jazz-house hitmaker St Germain’s ‘Rose Rouge’.

Now in 2022, the track has undergone another evolution at the hands of electronic stalwart Joy Orbison. Veering left towards the dance floor following a hypnotic intro, Joy O smoothly splices Smith’s vocals with his UK garage take on the classic St Germain offering.

“This remix reminds me of my earlier work – but maybe a more realised take on what I was trying to do back then,” says Orbison. “I was conscious of how the original track had been sampled many times in house and garage records and wanted to incorporate a bit of that while taking Jorja’s version in a new direction.”

Arriving off the back of the widespread international success of the first volume, the ‘Blue Note Re:Imagined II’ compilation album came out earlier this month. This time featuring the likes of Franc Moody, Oscar Jerome, Ego Ella May, Cherise, Theon Cross and many more, the project dropped alongside a new documentary exploring UK jazz’s biggest stars and their journey through the music industry so far.
