"I've been living below the standard / With a hunger that feeds the fire," sings Empress Of on Standard, the latest track pulled from her excellent debut album 'Me.'
This track is one of the more experimental, clamorous tracks featured on Lorely Rodriquez's first full-length, but it still holds weight in the pop canon for its simple lyrics and structure. It's an indicator of Empress Of's always evolving sonic identity; that is now a focused cohesion of far-reaching vocals, layered multitudinous synths, and a keen ear for a hook. Unflinching and direct, Standard sits in a sweet spot somewhere between the adventurous and familiar – you've heard music like this before, but not in a way as well executed as Empress Of has mastered her growing presence in your mind. With two tracks shared in a matter of 24 hours, Empress Of's M.O. seems to be to get to your senses as soon as possible.
