Darq E Freaker – Mardi Gras (Instrumental)

Darq E Freaker, quiet for most of the year following his break-out success on Blueberry with Danny Brown last year, made a welcome return on Oakland rapper Gita’s latest single Mardi Gras in April.

As the lines between grime, rap and club music blur more and more, local producers have to do something special to avoid being drowned out and the best ones are already marking out their territory: S-X’s ominous but imperial beats are being picked up by Birdman’s Rich Gang and Angel Haze, Faze Miyake is dominating the British scene with his powerful, direct style and Darq E Freaker’s vivid colour palette is almost making a sub-genre of its own. The sliding, layered Mardi Gras remind us of what he can do; we just hope he’ll start doing more of it soon.
