RVNG Intl.'s mixtape for xxjfg

RVNG Intl. label boss Matt Werth has some of the finest ears in the business. This is the guy who’s just put out Blondes’ debut album, is bringing us Julia Holter’s new album ‘Ekstasis’ next month and never stops surprising with his FRKWYS collaboration series (most recently: Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras and The Congos). While it’s pretty much a given that a RVNG Intl. mixtape would be rich pickings, this one Werth just made for exemplary blog xxjfg is special even by his standards, full of imagination-expanding audio joy and wonderfully weird pop. A particular highlight comes just 7 or so minutes before the end, a chiming embrace by 80s composer Vito Ricci that Pantha Du Prince clearly owes much to. I played that over and over in a hungover haze on Saturday. It helped.
