Palmistry on how his father’s death inspired ‘Afterlife’ and working with SOPHIE on Rihanna material
It’s been a wee while since the last staff mix. They’re back now though and this one starts with an awesome Awesome Tapes From Africa gem from Nâ Hawa Doumbia called Kungo Sogoni. Emeralds’ guitarist, Mark Mcguire, lifts spirits and hyptnotises us with his signature ambient, minimal sound on the next track. How To Dress Well’s cover of Elite Gymnastics, Shlomo’s “Just Us,” and Terius Nash’s “Wake Me When It’s Over” gently float us over a caffeine slump with their introspective melodies and mournful swells.
Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire’s ode to inebriation, “Huzzah!,” lightens the mood whilst “See Me Feel Me” from Sepalcure’s phenomonal upcoming LP wraps us back in a blanket of fuzzy, analogue loveliness. Damu, The Field, and Scuba’s newest offerings continue on the same tip with their bliss-out synths and warm, pulsing beats. Then there’s a great track by XXXY from this week’s free Scion compilation followed by Mosca’s infectiously danceable Bax. Graphic’s “Mama Grizzlies” starts out nice enough, but has an unsettling, fearsome beat when it kicks in. Blawan’s new acid-laced R&S banger makes a Moodymann lecture sound genuinely terrifying and Julio Bashmore’s mix of Deadboy’s “Heartbreaker” goes out to all those who’ve been hurt by love. Zola Jesus shines a final light on the mix, belting out a message of positivity over some upbeat drum machines so that all is right and well in the world once more. Onward, October!
