Dummy Mix 28 // Ray Mang

UK producer RAY MANG, known to his mates as Raj Gupta, is definitely not a new boy on the Disco scene. He landed his first 12” Number One in 1996 on Noid recordings, set up his own record label Mangled in 1998 and released two albums (‘Mangled’ and ‘Mangled Again’). Add to this a list of collaborations and close musical acquaintances (Larry Tong, Nathan D’troit, Foolish Felix, The Glimmers) and you have one of the most prolific contributors to the Boogie/Disco/House canon this side of the nineties. More recently, his release on DFA earlier this year saw him offer P-Funk with a Disco House twist made for the dance floor (Bullet Proof feat Lady Miss Kier) and a blissed-out Balearic stomper (Look into My Eyes). So we were super chuffed when he agreed to put together an exclusive mix for Dummy (download it above) ahead of his gig at secretsundaze this Thursday. More details on the party here.

What sort of mix have you made for us?

A selection of some current favourites with a few new upcoming Mang remixes and a splattering from the past.

Please tell us about a couple of the tracks you’ve included and why.

Just stumbled across my 12” of the Ish classic Don’t Stop (T.K. Disco) while browsing the other day and had to give it an airing! And Crazy Penis Smoothin Groovin (Mang’s Dumpy Re-rub) on Paper Recordings is a little re-version I did recently which I played out for the first time the other night. It seemed to go down well with the more wobbly jawed dancers on the floor that night so I thought I’d drop in here too!

When and how did you start making music?

I got a drum kit back in ‘83 and started banging it and playing in some local no-name bands. Not sure if it constituted ‘music’ but we certainly made some noise!

Can you tell us a bit about your recent release on DFA?

The A-side “Bullet Proof” is a cover version of a George Clinton anti-war song from the 80’s featuring vocals from the brilliant Lady Kier Kirby (of Deee-lite). The B-side “Look Into My Eyes” is a slower hypnotic balearic disco number. The title is a Kenny Craig quote.

Have you got any more releases on the way and what can we expect?

New Mangled 12’s coming through. The next is a three track Mang EP of ‘Letcha Body Go’, ‘Inner City Disco’ & ‘Stealing Love’. Just finishing up an album of new material with The Glimmers that should be out some time around the summer. Chatting with DFA on some future things.
There’s an album with Pete Z as ‘Sound Captives’ with vocals from Jhelisa and Mozez which should be surfacing later in the year. Lots of remixes coming up. 2020 Soundsystem, Bing Ji Ling, Crazy Penis, Virgo Four, 9dw, Sare, Gorillaz, Main Stem, Bonar Bradberry, Twisted Tongue, Soupaczar, etc

Who’s been getting you excited musically at the moment?

Eko, Esquivel, Gatto Fritto, Steve Reich, Mascara, Lyn Christopher, Emperor Machine & Bernard Estardy amongst many others.

What are you most looking forward to in 2010?

Right now the World Cup in South Africa!

What’s your favourite colour?

Green this month! Spring’s here at long last! 🙂

Catch Ray Mang and Morgan Geist at the secretsundaze and Electric Minds party this Thursday 1st April.
