Dummy Mix 149 // AlunaGeorge
For the first mix of the new year, we’re keeping things local here at Dummy headquarters. To get us started, London’s rising stars AlunaGeorge drop a quick mix full of hip hop, soul and R&B classics.
Based the UK’s capital, Aluna Francis and George Reid first came onto our radar with their ‘You Know You Like It’ EP, which came out last spring on the interesting Tri Angle label – one which favours unrestricted, atmospheric new sounds and home to outliers like How To Dress Well, Holy Other, Evian Christ and Clams Casino. Following their first record is a second remix EP called ‘Your Drums, Your Love’, featuring reinterpretations from Lil Silva, Duke Dumont, The Prototypes and Deebs.
Fascination lies at the heart of the pair’s music, as they have a flare for locating the soul of R&B and the warm, fuzzy glitches of electronic music, and mashing them up to channel the 90s female vocalist impression while pleasantly brighten things up with the sharp, sugar-coated machine funk.
AlunaGeorge will release their debut album ‘Body Music’ on Island Records this June, though that’s six months away. If you couldn’t wait that long, treat yourself to the mix they made us, it’s a little special something to kickstart 2013.
