Dummy Mix 111 // Brenmar's Slow Grind, Deep Hustle Vol. 2

Few DJs have the hustle of Brenmar. He emerged towards the end of 2010 with a clutch of tectonic takes on mechanical / sensual soul released on Grizzly and Discobelle. A pro-drummer (ex of These Are Powers), his DJ sets have proved, time and again, the relentless force of night-time R&B, hip hop and house.

But for his mixes for Dummy (of which this is the second) expose the softer, slower side of Brenmar’s unique hustle. The first edition of Slow Grind, Deep Hustle came out last year, and here’s the second. Sit back, soak it up, and enjoy. Full tracklist at the bottom of the page.

Hey Brenmar, how’s it going?

good! keeping busy, just werking.

Loving chapter two of your Slow Grind, Deep Hustle mix – any stories behind any of the track selections?

Thnx! Vol. 1 was totally throwback which was fun but i’m also all about new music so i knew i wanted to showcase some newer r&b this time around. You still got your late 90’s, early 2000 jams on there but i’ve also included a few songs from last year and 2012 that I feel channel that same energy.

How are you finding LA? Is it a permanent move?

LA has been amazing! pretty girls, great weather, good food…I’m not mad. I’m here for a few more months but I’m def. going back to NY, I miss it. I might come back to LA more permanently in the future but there’s still a lot for me to do in NY, I’m not done there yet.

You’ve been working with lots of folks – Rashad & Spinn included. How was that?

Great, they good friends back from Chicago so it’s all love. Yea the last 5 months or so has been all about collaborating. I didn’t really plan that, just kinda the way things have been moving.

What other collaborations/projects do you have up your sleeves?

I’m working on a lot of original tracks with and for vocalists. Really excited but I dont want to name names in case things fall through or whatever, you know how it goes. A lot of proper hiphop and r&b though. Tunes should start filtering out soon enough.

SXSW is round the corner. Who’s your tip?

tip? like hot band or artist? I dont really know who else is playing besides myself and other dj friends to be honest lol.

And finally, any more hustling tips for Dummy readers?

You get back what you put in, so work, everyday. You gotta live in the lab, never not working.
