The 10 Best R&S Tracks, according to Renaat Vandepapeliere

The legendary labels's co-founder chooses his favourite releases

Founded in 1984 Belgium’s R&S is the legendary electronic label famous for early releases from Aphex Twin, Joey Beltram, CJ Bolland and more. The label went on hiatus between 2001 and 2006 as Renaat felt the scene was repeating itself but in the past few years has released music by James Blake, Lone, Delphic, Pariah, Space Dimension Controller, Untold and Blawan.

With a label showcase happening in London this weekend (line-up and details below) co-founder Renaat has put together a list of his favourite R&S releases to mark the occasion – and there’s no Aphex or Joey Beltram in sight.

1. Drjum ‘Sex’

Renaat Vandepapeliere: “Fun, energetic with touches of samba and that out-there feel that can certainly facilitate any crowded dance floor in its adolescence. I love this track and it seems to be a finding a few treasured record boxes as well.”

2. Nonkeen ‘The Gamble’

“This is an album from the ever present genius Nils Frahm and his childhood school friends. The trio’s improvisational recordings eventually made their way into Frahm’s studio, where they would be further tweaked, eventually finding the form they take on The Gamble.”

3. Afriqua ‘Melamed’

“The vocal outlay defines the track here and urges you to listen right to the end. The bassline is subtle and that classic warp always grips you.”

4. Outlander ‘Vamp’

“I think this one gets played a lot and when it does it still has the energy that it once did, its nice to see rave still being portrayed.”

5. Lost Souls Of Saturn, Mashrou’ Leila ‘Bint El Khandaq’

“Lost Souls of Saturn is made up of Seth Troxler and Phil Moffa, its epic in length as it is in flavour. Its airy, beautiful and soulful. The sublime vocal is hypnotising and shows a certified edge to Seth’s work.”

6. Lone ‘Minds Eye Melody’

“A little bit of everything is sprinkled into this one from Lone. I believe he has really tried tell a story in ‘Minds Eye Melody’ – there are nice breaks, lovely synths and keys and a gentle baseline that creeps in.”

7. Capricorn ’20 hz (New Frequencies)’

“The chimes from the start and the not so subtle bassline create an almost urgent impact. The marching sound of the drum lead you to a euphoric middle, with those vibrant acid tones throughout leaving an underrated but classic track.”

8. Second Phase ‘Mentasm’

“Another rave classic here, Second Phase released all the way back in 1991. A great track that can played in the early hours.”

9. Jaydee ‘Plastic Dreams’

“I think if you ask a lot of people, this is one of their favourite and most distinguished tracks from R&S. Its pure melody and groove from 1992.”

10. Megalon ‘Spook’

“This is from 1995, a faster paced track than the last two, but still with a lot of groove and presence. Scatters of industrial elements and that famous acid warp cut right through making it one for the early hours.”
