Glasgow based Tom Scholefield graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2006 and has since been a regular creative head for Warp Records, Brainfeeder, Hyperdub, DFA Records, No-Fun Productions and Optimo Espacio.
He creates surreal music videos of digital landscapes reminiscent of Chris Cunningham’s Unkle videos, and equally great line drawn illustrative videos such as the one for Jamie Lidell which Tom says was inspired by “early hand made 80’s pop promo’s and re-runs of Rhubarb and Custard cartoons” He also makes music under the same name Konx-om-Pax, blurring the boundaries of art and music, successfully exploring both.
In an interview for Dazed&Confused Tom describes his influences – “Mainly films from Kubrick, Herzog and the avant garde scene, but also pop stuff from my child hood like Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park. Music wise it’s old school, badly produced Chicago house and Detroit techno, early Warp releases and an absolute tonne of experimental music that dates back to the 50’s, like Bernard Parmengiani and Erkki Kurenniemi. The US underground scene is really exciting now. My man Oneohtrix Point Never is making waves.”
Here you can see Tom’s videos for Marytn, Hudson Mohawke, Jamie Lidell, The Errors, as well as a nice short video including soundtrack by himself named “The Bedroom DJ”
Tom also started a project named ‘Display Copy’ – a brand new label and club night focusing on the “darker recesses of experimental electronica and techno” a “culmination of the various artistic directions of Konx-om-Pax and his ideological kinsmen” Dazed&Confused.
