James Ferraro and Teengirl Fantasy at Corsica Studios, 12/11/13

On Tuesday (November 12th), London's Corsica Studios played host to one of the best line-ups of experimental electronic music this year. Australian RVNG Intl. duo Gardland and North America's colourful dance duo Teengirl Fantasy joined underground legend James Ferraro for a joint showcase between BleeD and Baba Yaga's Hut. Gardland pummelled the soundsystem with their frazzled, rigidly four-to-the-floor techno, while Teengirl Fantasy wigged out with analogue dancefloor jams that seemed to transform, seamlessly, into cosmic footwork, but the audience was clearly out for Ferraro.

To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from him – when your entire career has been built on stylistic about-turns, relentless experimentation with form, and constant "what next?"s, it's hard to imagine what a live show might be like. Essentially an ambient/noise performance that cherry-picked elements of his electronic, post-'Far Side Virtual' output – the sub bass of 'Sushi', the text-to-speech spoken words from new album 'NYC, Hell 3:00AM' ("Swarovski. Swarovski.") – and injecting some of his dumb humour into the set, working familiar sounds like swear censor bleeps into the mix. All of it was jarringly disjointed, jolting you awake whenever you felt like you were becoming familiar with what was happening onstage, yet it was never abrasive.
