Flickr photographer of the month: Nathan Bobey

Nathan’s analogue photographs experiment with layered textures and deep contrasts. His double exposures are organic experiments in colour and light, and his monochrome photographs are stunning examples of a black and white world.

Where did you grow up?

I was born in California, but grew up in central Oregon for the most part. I still live in central Oregon, but I plan to move to New York this summer.

Where did you study?

I haven’t had any formal photography education, but I do plan on attending either SVA or FIT in New York for a BFA in photography.

Why photography?

That’s always the hardest question for me to answer. I’m not really sure… It’s hard to put into words how I feel about photography. I guess it feels like more of a necessity to me than a hobby or a job. Perhaps comparable to drinking water.. although I probably take photos more often than I drink water. I’ve never been good about drinking water.

What inspires you?

Just about everything… But humans in particular really inspire me. I always want to take everyone’s photo, not just people I know.. But everyone I see out in the world.

What are your favourite things to photograph?

People. I love the intimacy I feel with a person when I take their photo. I really like when someone asks me to take their picture.

Any exciting shoots coming up for you?

None to speak of.. Just lots of writing and math coming my way…

What music are you listening to at the moment?

I listen to Jay Reatard, Deerhunter, The Kills, Cold Cave, or Neon Indian on a daily basis… And Dreamsvrfer, of course..
