The 10 best tracks for after dark, according to Bill Brewster

Resident DJ at London’s Low Life, DJ History boss and co-author of ‘Last Night a DJ Saved My Life’, Bill Brewster is, it’s safe to say, an expert curator. Having brought his talented ears to ‘After Dark’, the latest compilation in the Late Night Tales series, he’s now taken some time to talk to Dummy about his personal 10 favourite tracks for the witching hour – or, as he puts it, “dance music for people who know how to make love.”

  1. True Mathematics – After Dark
Bill: “From the first golden era of hip hop, this was the first Hank Shocklee production I ever bought. Still sounds so fresh now.”
  2. Tad Wily – After Dark
Bill: “Exclusive tune for my new comp After Dark done by the hyper-talented young Polish producer Tad Wily.”
  3. Donald Fagen – The Nightfly
Bill: “One half of Steely Dan with the title track from his brilliant debut solo LP.”
  4. Corey Hart – Sunglasses At Night
Bill: “The original tune, as later covered by Tiga and Zyntherius. Ace early 80s dancefloor moodiness.”
  5. Psychic Mirrors – The Witching Hour
Bill: “Superb modern disco from mysterious group with great name.”
  6. Roy Ayers’ Ubiquity – Midnight After Dark
Bill: “Roy Ayers goes P-funk on this. First Ayers album I ever bought.”
  7. T Connection – At Midnight
Bill: “Killer drum break and an explosive verse/chorus. Still utterly amazing.”
  8. Phil Upchurch – Darkness, Darkness
Bill: “One of the great R&B guitarists delivers some serious symphonic soul, backed by an all-star session cast.”
  9. Floppy Sounds – Late Night
Bill: “Rob Rives, the man behind Floppy Sounds, is an old buddy of mine and, as this demonstrates, he makes beautiful liquid techno. He was also one third of Superstars Of Rock, who I signed nearly 20 years ago.”
  10. Curtis Mayfield – Right On For The Darkness
Bill: “One of my favourite last tunes. Sampled by Silicone Soul for their top ten hit Right On. HOT.”

Bill Brewster will DJ at the After Dark album launch party at London’s Big Chill Bar on Sunday 5th May – more information on that here..
