The 5 best places to eat during SXSW, according to Pure X

Austin, Texas, is not short on food joints but if you’re looking for some off-the-beaten-track style fare during this week’s SXSW festival, then who better to ask than hometown heroes Pure X. Frontman Nate filled us in on the band’s favourite places to chow down, from the sweetest soul food to the best BBQ. He’s pictured above outside his top pick Nubian Queen Lola’s. He recently busted his knee, hence the crutches, which means he’ll be playing his SXSW shows in a customised wheelchair. Rock and roll.

1. Nubian Queen Lola’s Cajun Soul Food Cafe
Nate: “My favorite place in town. Incredible food served with love. Pretty cheap too. Lola is generally the only person working so make sure to call ahead before you go. My shit is the fried pork chops with collard greens, cornbread, and red beans and rice. Closed on Sundays to feed the homeless.”

2. La Condesa
Nate: “I generally hate going downtown (especially to 2nd street) but this place is worth it. Everything I’ve tried here is good, especially the drinks. Great for brunch. The mimosas are cheap and coffee is perfect.”

3. Franklin’s
Nate: “My favorite BBQ in town. You gotta get there by 10:30am to get any food tho. Might be even more packed for South By. Get the fatty brisket. The turkey is really good too. Throw on some of their espresso BBQ sauce and you’re gold.”

4. Tamale House
Nate: “Cheapest place in town. Get full for $4 and under. Great migas. Cash only.”

5. Daily Juice / Juice Land
Nate: “Juice, coconut water, smoothies, raw chocolate, etc. Not the cheapest, but really good for healthy shit. The ranchero quinoa is awesome.”
