Watch a short film about New York's defiant underground scene

New Music Cities is a new series of radical short films from Dazed and high street brand All Saints that profile the past, present and future underground music scenes in various cities. Their first stop is in New York, where the music underground is characterised by narrator Richard Hell as "offensive" and "defiant", and the video quite literally profiles the future of this bold scene in the form of Unlocking the Truth, a metal band formed of three 12 year olds who say they "don't want to be the same". Meanwhile, Hell describes the past in the form of his adolescent musical experiences in 1970s Brooklyn, and experimental folk-rock duos Starred and Widowspeak give a peek into an innovative, independent present. The whole thing is set to luscious lo-fi shots of New York's bustling landscape, imbuing the city with a warmth and intimacy.

Further editions of the series are set to travel to Tokyo, Gothenburg and London with the likes of Gilles Peterson, Mount Kimbie, Micachu and Katy B; watch this space for more.
