Unknown Mortal Orchestra – AKA Ruban Nielson – recently told Dummy that the experience of touring consistently for a year, and the general “feeling of being overwhelmed”, was a major influence behind the new album ‘II’. This new video for the album’s dazzling opener From The Sun, directed by Rick Alverson, reflects this sense vulnerability and overexposure to a painful extent, as a man bound to a chair like a human installation endures being licked, kissed, spat on, undressed and coloured in by various strangers. The uncomfortably dark-comic tone of the film makes it a struggle to watch all the way through, but it couldn’t be more perfect for this track – one that sounds as though it’s being sung through a smile on a summer’s day, until you actually listen to the lyrics and realise the devastating depression they express.
