The Knife - A Cherry On Top

For the video for A Cherry On Top, a track on ‘Shaking the Habitual’ some would politely term “difficult”, The Knife have taken yet another left turn. Full of Fire and A Tooth For An Eye gave independent directors (Marit Östberg and the duo Roxy Farhat and Kakan Hermansson) the chance to play with narrative, but this simple graphic is probably the closest to really representing the album.

Two mirrored square grids with a middle point warp to an eerie synth wash and minimal clatters of percussion that eventually build to a sitar-backed chorus – which could be McCartney if it wasn’t so bleak – then veers off again. What are they meant to be? They look a bit like decks. Eyes, maybe? Who knows.
