Premiere: Mark Barrott - Island Life

There's an old book called Vanishing Birds which is filled with gorgeous illustrations of rare bird species. Depresseingly, these species were all dead or dying out when the book was written, meaning that future generations looking at the book will only see some dazzling, fantastical creatures rather than anything that exists in the real world anymore.

The artwork for Mark Barrott's 'Sketches From An Island' depicts a similar image: birds of paradise flocking around some lush flora on an exotic isle. The exotic isle in question isn't some kind of Galàpagos, but actually somewhere way more familiar. If you're feeling fancy it's the White Island, if you're feeling fancier still then it's Eivissa, but most of you will know it as Ibiza. Ibiza is where Barrott has been living the past couple of years, and it's where he recorded 'Sketches From An Island'. The album is an ode to the Balearic island that he calls home and has that kind of slow, relaxed, quasi-spiritual new age-y quality to its music, something that's none more evident than in this new video for Island Life, which repurposes found footage of tribal activity and dancing.

'Sketches From An Island' finds its home on International Feel, the label that Barrott set up in Uraguay in 2008 that housed some really essential 12"s of dubby, downtempo house and disco by the likes of DJ Harvey (as Locussolus), Rocha (an alias of Barrott's, as it turns out), Hungry Ghost, Maxxi & Zeus, and Mugwump.

International Feel released 'Sketches From An Island' on June 2nd 2014 (buy).
