Premiere: Kahn - No More

Whether it’s Bristolian bashment collaborations like Backchat, soaring two-step for Idle Hands, or bassbin-shakin’ dubstep for Deep Medi, Kahn has proved himself one of the UK’s most effortlessly versatile producers at it over the last few years. His genre-surfing abilities were further evidenced on the ‘Kahn’ EP this month – ranging from the The Bug-esque Badman City featuring Flowdan, to the desolated sounds of No More (one of two tracks with Kahn trying his hand at the vocal for the first time).

Here’s an exclusive look at the video for No More, and it’s an appropriately sinister watch, with grainy footage of Kahn murmuring to camera, interspersed with midnight-hour cityscapes and shots of what looks like space dust dissipating on an alien planet.

Kahn is also a member of Young Echo and their debut album is due in just over a week, which he described as having “been a long time coming, but we’re all happy it’s finally coming out.” Read our Q&A with the man himself below.

Hey Kahn, looking forward to the summer?

Why, yes I am. It’s been a particularly dreary and prolonged winter hasn’t it.

That’s you singing on No More, and very good it sounds too. How did you get into doing your own vocals, and how does it differ from working with a vocalist?

Thanks. A lot of people don’t realise I do vocals, even good friends of mine. I’ve been singing since I was a kid and it’s been nice to have an opportunity to show that side of my work in my latest release, it feels more personal.

I love working with vocals in general and it was a conscious decision to have every track on the EP include a vocal.

You’ve sampled Flowdan before on Percy with Neek. What was it like collaborating with him on Badman City?

It’s a bit of a dream come true, Flowdan is one of my favourite MCs and someone I’d always wanted to work with so it’s been great to have the opportunity to collaborate.

I think he did a great job and I hope to collaborate with him again in future.

What’s really exciting you musically at the moment?

All the new talent coming through in Bristol at the moment, I’m excited for where the next generation are going to take things.

Black Box released the ‘Kahn’ EP on the 8th April, and Ramp/PTN will release Young Echo’s ‘Nexus’ on April 28th.
