Nite Jewel on the studio and being an expert

Much has been made of Nite Jewel’s new, brushed sound. But, as Ramona Gonzalez explains in explains in this lovely video from Yours Truly, the shift from the lo-fidelity of her first album to the studio quality of the terrific ‘One Second Of Love’ is less of an ideological shift, more one of cash and expertise – the vocals sound good, she says, because there was someone on hand to compress them well, and so on, and that often it’s the urge of an artist to do everything themselves that lets songs down. In this day and age of artists as minibusinesses – promoteam, engineer, songwriter and producer all in one! – it’s a pertinent idea, and this video is a short, pretty snap look at one of the modern age’s most fascinating imaginations.

Mexican Summer released Nite Jewel’s ‘One Second Of Love’ this week. You must, must, must hear it.
