Mini documentaries breaking down Dilla's samples

With the internet full to the brim of tributes, it’s difficult to say something about Dilla that hasn’t already been said before. But who better to give us a fresh take on his beats than his long-term buddy and collaborator, Waajeed. Over the course of Dilla Month (February being the anniversary of both his birth and his death), Waajeed’s site Bling 47 will post a series of video histories, documentaries and unheard remixes.

First up is DJ Amir, from Kon & Amir, breaking down the sample from the Slum Village track “I Don’t Know”. Admired for his desire to work beyond the then-usual hip hop catchment of funk and jazz samples, here Dilla reworked Brazilian guitarist Badan Powell into a beat which made Amir “flip his wig”.

With each short freshly shot, cut and animated by Waajeed himself, if you only check one homage to Dilla this month, make sure it’s Bling 47.
