Hex Breakers Quintet: Riders excerpt

Brooklyn/New Orleans flummoxing experimental/drone/noise supergroup Hex Breaker Quintet combine the brass and modular forces of orchestra-bred trumpets and electronics duo Grasshopper (Jesse DeRosa and Josh Millrod) and the hand-crafted synth-gun boxes of future time/space communication masters Telecult Powers. (Witchbeam and Mister Mathhews) The third part of the supergroup are beyond-atmospheric forces – encountered in astral-plane transcendence through thought/sound broadcast (from which the unspecified “cosmic other” fifth member perhaps arrives).

Hex Breaker’s album ‘Riders’, recently released on NNA Tapes, is a split between the group as a quartet and a quintet — the first side is without the now-New Orleans-based Withcbeam. Chillingly serene brass lines guiding high-pitched timbres through a deep flow of low frequency sine waves that document Hex Breaker’s trans-Plutonian explorations, programmed with the intent that listeners might experience deep-space discoveries of their own.

Their latest mystical uncovering did not require such far-out cosmic travel – but instead was born of an internet source plugged in on their home continent. This found video of a brass ensemble gathered together in serious brotherhood in the Canadian countryside happens to perfectly sync with an excerpt from the tape’s second side. The pairing recalls a Dark Side Of The Rainbow type mind-alteration – while giving the pastoral side of their sound a new level of meaning.

NNA Tapes released Hex Breaker Quartet/Quintet’s ‘Riders’.
