Girls - Vomit

The first thing that strikes you about this latest Girls video is that it’s so…empty. You don’t see a single human being for the first two minutes – even then, flashes of life come in the form of anonymous passers-by and fleeting extreme close-ups of expressionless faces. There is a lack of an emotional narrative here, a lack of human empathy – all there is to look at is a souped-up car, a bunch of roses, flashing lights. Materiality, devoid of life, is hurled at the viewer in meaningless chunks, capturing the spiralling hopelessness, the aching loneliness of the song, which is all about a night spent seeking someone to share it with.
