Lady Gaga - Yoü and I

Lady Gaga wants you to know that she isn’t running out of ideas; she wants you to know that she’s got plenty more alter-egos rolled up in those meaty sleeves of hers.

This is about the only fact you will derive with any certainty from her latest video, for power ballad Yoü and I , which she released last night. Skipping from robot to mermaid to cross-dresser to nymph, Gaga hardly settles in one costume or one meaning throughout the whole video. This is her genius, her forte – remember the Bad Romance video? This is the kind of madness that reminds us how endlessly, ridiculously creative this woman is.

This is the Gaga I like – the Gaga that doesn’t rest on one idea, but explodes through several with all the force of a teal-haired atomic bomb. No, it doesn’t make any sense, but it’s intriguing, it’s relentless and it’s fresh – it’s even just about good enough to excuse the narcissism of the Gaga-on-Gaga kiss.
