There are thousands of reasons to gasp out loud at this video. Even without the angsty throes of Bon Iver’s stand-out track Holocene , the imagery alone would be enough to overwhelm.

As the Wisconsin-based singer describes the realisation that he is “not magnificent”, his voice wavers over the image of a child climbing mountains, scrambling over beaches and reaching out to skim the wings of birds of prey with his fingertips. The Nabil Elderkin-directed video was shot in Iceland, and is so resplendent in the natural beauty of its volcanic horizon that it had its world premiere on the National Geographic website. Watch it, and you’ll get that “not magnificent” feeling too.
