The record industry makes mistakes

Arthur Russell's damning rejection note from Warner Brother's A&R surfaces online.

Disco producer, pop singer and avant garde musician Arthur Russell,) today considered in some circles as one of the greatest songwriters and producers ever, never saw the success he deserved in his lifetime. This morning, we came across this wonderful piece of detritus online, the terse 1979 note from David Berson, who went on to sign The Modern Lovers, damning Arthur Russell’s music, writing simply “Who knows what this guy is up to – you figure it out.”

<p><a href=The Tumblrer who found this wrote rather judgementally “Small minds, record executives”, but, in the interests of fairness, considering the vast quantity of terrible music a junior A&R man has to listen to on a daily basis, such mistakes are inevitable. David Berson, we forgive you.
