Steve Reich prepares new album

Reich's new record will include several of the composer's recent works, including a reflection on the 9/11 attacks.

It’s not long to wait now – on 6th September, Steve Reich will release his newest album, WTC 9/11, a collection of compositions ranging from his 2009 Mallet Quartet (performed for the album by So Percussion) to his 2002 Dance Patterns.

The album’s title track is a reflection on the attacks that horrified New York City – and the world – ten years ago, in a composition commissioned for and recorded by Kronos Quartet. The piece strikes a personal nerve for Reich, whose son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter were in New York at the time of the attacks. Like previous works It’s Gonna Rain and Different Trains the piece includes pre-recorded voices, both from the day of the attacks and from interviews with fire fighters and survivors, conducted by Reich in 2010.

Nonesuch will release ‘WTC 9/11’ on 6th September 2011.
