Jay-Z is helping to score The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann's opulent adaptation is getting a soundtrack from the 21st century's king of excess.

Jay-Z is reportedly working on the score to Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby, due out in May this year.

Although the news has yet to be officially confirmed, Jeymes Samuel of The Bullits announced his plans on his Twitter page. Samuel tweeted that “Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming CLASSIC ‘The Great Gatsby. It is too DOPE for words!”

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel depicts the roaring twenties and the opulent life of a man named Jay, so it seems pretty appropriate for the excessive white truffle-consuming rapper to get on board. Not to mention, fans of Baz Luhrmann’s work will be aware of his tendency to score period pieces with popular modern tunes, notably using Radiohead in Romeo + Juliet and working Madonna tracks into Moulin Rouge.

The Australian director is allegedly a huge fan of the rapper, and took a new approach to acting by blasting Jay-Z songs during rehearsals, which actress Isla Fisher described as “just so liberating”. You can watch the first trailer for the film below – naturally it’s accompanied by No Church In The Wild.
