At 8pm on Thursday in Dalston, a clever man will predict the next 1,000 years of music
Adam Harper, who writes for The Wire, his own site Rouges Foam and Dummy occasionally, wrote an interesting book called Infinite Music, and on Thursday, he will discuss it with Mira Calix and Nightwave at Cafe Oto in Dalston, east London.
In the book, Adam brings his usual mix of music and critical theory to the subject of new musics, questioning how musicians and listeners are tapping into the infinite possibilites of the era, or not. It’s not the first time he’s considered where the music of now fits with the music of the past, having written about the romantic visions of John Maus for a lovely monograph, as well as the creation of the 90s as an artefact and the po-mo futurism of Kuedo’s ‘Severant’ [Planet Mu] for us.
The talk is part of The Wire’s Salon series of events at Cafe Oto, in which music is discussed by thinkers. Previous Salons have included looks at Daphne Oram, field recording and folk music.
