1Xtra radio documentary on UK club culture

The legacy of clubs including Metalheadz, Sidewinder and FWD>> and their influence on UK music are explored in two part series.

Journalist Emma Warren has made a two-part radio documentary about the roots of current UK club culture for BBC 1Xtra. Presented by Ronnie Herel, the first episode looks back at the influential nights Soul II Soul (run by Jazzie B), The Wild Bunch and Goldie’s Metalheadz, and is available to listen to online now. Part two will focus on grime night Sidewinder, bassline house night Niche and home of dubstep FWD>>, and goes out this Sunday 11th December at 9pm.

On her blog, Emma explains that “Part one is about the clubs that laid the foundations for the powerful and self-regenerating underground music scene we’ve got in the this country, and part two looks at three clubs that invented a new genre. I chased down MCs (got some, lost some), DJs (ditto) and club regulars to try and tell the story of what those places were really like, and to show what they created.”

Tune in to BBC 1Xtra this Sunday 11th December at 9pm to hear part two of this exciting documentary
