Vondelpark - California Analog Dream
After the introverted expressivity of Dracula, here’s another cut from Vondelpark’s forthcoming debut LP ‘Seabed’ for R&S. Back in 2010, California Analog Dream was a jittery patchwork – with a thick-stringed acoustic and muffled vocals nestling disparately against a silky-smooth garage beat. Vondelpark have now reappraised the track off their ‘Sauna’ EP, opting for a more organic, earthy palette, giving the plaintive melody space to be elevated.
Artists re-treading old ground can be risky business, and may betray a dearth of ideas, but there aren’t any signs of that here. Rather, it reveals maturity, and the ability to confidently elaborate on a previous idea. It suggests a process of moving beyond the laptop screens that draws comparisons to Darkstar – another UK trio to recently break new ground with a less electronic sound and more fluid, group-focused dynamic.
