One of today's best musicians playing live in tiny Manhattan room, streamed for the whole world.
Julia Holter’s album, ‘Ekstasis’ was released on RVNG this week, and it is the best record released since I’ve been editing this magazine. You absolutely have to click this link to listen to a live show she played at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge.
The venue is a mid-sized venue, with lovely acoustics, that normal hosts recitals and that sort of thing. What’s so striking is the reverential atmosphere underlying the feeling of every listener, live or at laptops, that Holter – a classically trained multi-instrumentalist from LA – is thinking in absolutely extraordinary ways about music, and that being around while she does so makes this totally shitty age a little better.
