Grimes – Genesis

After coming to terms with the fact that Grimes has not covered Nas’s ‘Illmatic’ opener, I love this new cut from the Montreal electronic singer and producer.

It’s the first since her signing to august Brit indie 4AD was announced yesterday. Here, her sound is far more streamlined than on the extremely promising, if scattergun, Arbutus albums ‘Halifaxa’ and ‘Geidi Primes’. And, as she touches the twinkling synths of J-pop and the clouded melodies of the Cocteau Twins she mentioned on Twitter yesterday, she announces herself as a proud pop star in waiting.
