This highly anticipated bonus track from the Outkast man's second album certainly overwhelms with sonic detail.
Rather like a first time watching 3D TV, Higher Res – the Jai Paul-produced cut from Big Boi’s ‘Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors’ – feels initially overwhelming. At its centre is an unruly snare-kick rhythm, and the whole thing swerves at breakneck speed, featuring a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance from vocalist Little Dragon. It does all sink in more after a few listens; Jai Paul’s buried falsetto – used to such wondrous effect on the yearns of Jasmine – reveals some of its soul, with an effects-ridden Big Boi still flowing adventurously. But I’m left craving a version in lower resolution: one that tones down the sonic maximalism and dares to let the track breathe, even just for a moment.
