A$AP Rocky - Celebration & Pretty Flacko

A$AP Rocky, one of last year’s most loved and most hyped rappers, has started the year with a bang – continuing his series of high calibre releases. With a debut album, a group project with his A$AP Mob and a collaboration with araabMuzik on the horizon, a couple of new tracks from ‘DAT PMF’ have surfaced.

Celebration, the first and most recent, is a gem of a track with rattling trap percussion and lashings of bass coupled with a piano and synthesized whine . Comparisons with T.I.‘s 2006 smash What You Know are apt and A$AP Rocky, like T.I., holds his own and handles the big production with characteristic aplomb.

The second, Pretty Flacko was made available for download on New Years Day and may not count as new but may very well be the best of his new releases. Produced by affiliate SpaceGhostPurrp and heralding one of A$AP Rocky’s newest pseudonym, it is a departure from the slowed down, blissed out sound that largely defined the rapper last year. SGP’s preference for the strange and sinister is translated into an unpredictable screeching, grunting and bleeping swamp of a track. Whilst most would concede that A$AP Rocky isn’t the best lyricist his ability to adjust his flow is a great in itself and the way he comfortably takes any beat in his stride hints at bigger things in the future.
