"Hello, Sleep ∞ Over!" With her single ‘Casual Diamond’ out on Hippos In Tanks in April, Stefanie Franciotti tells us a little about herself.
Sleep ∞ Over started off as a band, operating out of Austin, Texas. Things have now been stripped back, and the project is largely the work of single individual Stefanie Rose Franciotti. Their sound too has slowly evolved from hazy lo-fi (though the emphasis on melody was even back then apparent), to something far more lush and personal. New single Casual Diamond, due for release on the excellent label Hippos In Tanks this April, is a cutting waterfall of poignant, of-the-moment emotion. Big guitars, whispery fine vocals, richly executed noise. There’s also an album in the works.

What’s your current location?
Austin, Tx.
How would you describe your sound?
I want the listener to feel like they are surrounded. I want to feel an impression rather than a hard focus on a particular sound. I want my recordings to convey what was happening in a specific moment for me.
How do you record?
I have recorded in every type of recording environment, but I prefer to record at home with my own hardware. For the upcoming LP, I recorded in my room with the help of my friend Joe Jacobs and sent off the tracks to get mixed down by Al Carson who lives on the east coast. It’s been a different way of communicating than I am used to, but I feel like the three of us have found our rhythm in the process.

Who are your heroes?
People who challenge themselves to find their own creative voice. People who are centered in their thoughts and actions. People who lose themselves in their craft.
What’s your next release?
The ‘Casual Diamond 7” on Hippos In Tanks. And I’m releasing the first Sleep ∞ Over LP on Hippos In Tanks this summer.
When are you next playing live?
We’re playing the Altered Zones party for SXSW. That’s all we have planned for now.
Your tracks have been around the internet for a little while now. How have things changed for you since you started out?
I’m working with different people now. I can fully realize my ideas without conflict.
What are your favourite things to do in and around Austin, Texas?
I like to swim in the river and skateboard with my friends. I like to explore the green belt in Austin. I like to go to thrift stores and estate sales.
