Highs and lows dominate August’s staff mix symbolising a month where great festivals and tragic events left us all feeling a bit more than usual. Othello Woolf starts us off on a slightly sombre note singing about heartbreak and reluctance to ever fall in love again. We get a bit floaty and hazy over the next few selections from bedroom romantic Maria Minerva, R&S’s ambient producer Klaus, and others. Air France interrupts this caffeine slump to remind us how good it is to be around you, and the new The Weeknd keeps everything mellow and vibey. Omar-S and Theo Parrish’s collaboration of Omar’s new EP signifies that something is on the horizon though and the ominous synths in Maceo Plex strengthen that feeling. Suddenly we’re thrown deep into a Roman coliseum in the middle of a gory sacrifice as the mind melting Philip D. Kick remixes our latest release on the Dummy label, The Darkest Hype by Cadenza. Vrill’s original stomper from the new Berghain 05 compilation on Ostgut Ton takes us deeper into this terrifying vortex until suddenly Gadi from Wolf + Lamb and Eli from Soul Clap offer a helping hand out and remind us that it’s all going to be ok. Whew. Here’s to you, August.
