Dummy Mix 22 // Primary 1

Joe Flory aka PRIMARY 1 (read our interview with him) is no one trick pony. He does pop with teeth (see Foaming), big room club bangers (see Radiates and Who’s There? with RITON) and now hazy, lazy, drum-less ditties on this brilliant dawn/dusk mixtape. Particularly loving the previously unreleased PRIMARY 1 track Who’s Afraid Of The Dark.

So Joe, what sorta mixtape have you made for us?

This mixtape is called ‘Who’s Afraid of the Dark?’ which is a title that I’ve been trying to use for some time now. Basically its mainly stuff without drums. Which is my favourite stuff really.

Who have you included and why?

Bright Morning Star by The Country Gentlemen is a beautiful hymn and suits the mixtape theme. There’s a track by Frank Pahl who writes lots of music for theatre and dance companies, and he makes his own automatic instruments that are like sequencers. However, instead of circuit boards there’ll be a cog pulling a wheel, that pulls a string, that plucks a harp. There’s also one by Babe Terror who’ll be releasing a record on Phantasy Records soon. I can honestly tell you that its the most bizarre music I’ve ever heard in my life, so I did a version of one of his tracks that I can understand more. The last track is Who’s Afraid Of The Dark. A song that I love but can’t get anyone to release. Except you lot! Sneaked it in.

‘Mess Detective’ is highly enjoyable. Some awesome songs on there that didn’t make the cut to your album. So what can we expect from your debut proper?

The album’s been through millions of changes which is what’s fun about it. At the end of the day this album is about trying to write good songs that can stand alone, whereas ‘Mess Detective’ was about throwing together for fun. It’s been really great to try and create a cohesive record without getting bored.

A little birdie told me you’re about to start working on your live show. What’s it going to be like?

A bit of a rock show hopefully. I’ve got a guitarist and a drummer so that’s rock and roll, right?

What are you most excited about in 2010?

Releasing a record hopefully! And maybe a tour? yeah!

What’s your favourite colour?

Blue.
