Essex-based DJ and audio-visual artist Sim Hutchins was brought up on the fuzzy frequencies of pirate radio from a young age. Since then, his creative direction has meandered from elaborate video and website installations to sentimental club music, making sure his work continues to surprise at every step of the way. His ‘Club Love’ EP from last year invited listeners to submit their favourite memories of the club and raving tales, amounting to a highly personal project that went beyond any ordinary record release.
Upholding his tendency to dive headfirst into new sounds and styles, Hutchins’ Dummy mix spans an eclectic range of tracks representing the bleeding-edge of rap music from across the globe right now. “Rap music has got me through the toughest periods in my life, and as my tastes (and productions) in electronic music fluctuate over the years, hip hop has always been a constant companion,” Sim says. “There’s an escapism in listening to Chief Keef rapping about his favourite brand of jeans, or Young Scooter dropping wikiHow-like bars on making millions in the skreets; these are young black people using their voices to change their life and you can’t help but be motivated when listening to that.”
