DUMMY
The Music Quarterly No. 3 Autumn 2006
If there's an item of clothing that embodies
the contemporary guitar band, it's skinny jeans. However, of late,
skinnies have started to get a little too skinny. The difference
between trouser and surgical support has become blurred. The end
result is the unsightly phenomenon of VBS - visible boxer shorts.
By including two percent spandex in their jeans, Cheap Monday must
bear some of the responsibility, but it's a classic case of a good
idea pushed to the limit, then beyond. It's the same with music.
Recycle the same idea too many times and the end result is shabby
undergarments in bas-relief. There are no bunched pants on show in
issue three of Dummy. We travelled to Las Vegas to interview The
Killers (page 48), who've found new ideas close to home and reinvented
themselves on a grand scale; Mike Skinner (page 68) has re-engaged
with the grime/garage scene that spawned him and found new inspiration;
and Albert Hammond Junior (page 10) has taken the new ideas The Strokes
didn't want and recorded a solo album. Meanwhile, Jamie T (page 84)
is too young to need new ideas just yet - the one he's got should
see him do a Lily next year - and he's the poster boy for a new breed
of solo artists (see our round-up on page 76) who are breaking with
the art rock/post-punk paradigm. We've had a few new ideas of our
own. Having established the magazine - we're on our third issue -
we're launching a club night and Dummy Monthly, a digital newsletter
- please join our mailing list at www.dummymag.com to receive details
of both.
Of course, any chaps out there reluctant to bin those skinnies
should be aware that there's a quick fix solution for VBS - go commando.
