'WE WEREN'T REALLY GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY PROPER COUNTRY MUSIC. '
LET THE MULES SMASH A GLASS OVER YOUR HEAD.

London-based five-piece The Mules started out as a country band who changed direction because, as singing drummer Ed explains, 'we weren’t really good enough to play proper country music.' But as those who have caught their energising live shows or heard their frenetically eclectic debut album Save Your Face well know, something of the Wild West remains: The Mules can sound like the soundtrack to a brilliant bar brawl – all flying whisky bottles and chairs over heads - in your favourite Western.

This is not just down to the fact that they have a fiddle player. Elements of Balkan folk, psychobilly and even classical music all reverberate through an album of...

GOOD SHOES
THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK
(BRILLE)
8/10

Opinion on Good Shoes has been bafflingly divided, particularly for the music critic who finds their lo-fi take on post punk indie refreshingly appealing. For every devoted blogger clawing themselves giddy over the south London quartet, there are a smaller, but no less vitriolic, number of voices adamant that Good Shoes aren’t worth the hype. The main bone of contention seems to be Rhys Jones' voice. Is it affected? Can he actually sing? Which misses the point entirely...

'I GET BORED BY TOO MANY SLOW TRACKS, EVEN IF THEY'RE BEAUTIFUL.'
DAMERO WILL LEAVE YOU DREAMING OF BERLIN.

Marit Posch was doing PR for Ellen Allien's label Bpitch Control when her boss heard a few of her demos - and straight away she was whisked off to the studio to become Damero. On her debut album Happy In Grey, production by a range Bpitch buddies (including Marit herself and Ellen Allien-collaborator Apparat) provide a buzzing, misty framework for Marit's classically-trained vocals: pre-technological ballads over post-technological beats.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WRITING SONGS? HAVE THEY ALWAYS BEEN ELECTRONIC?
I started in 2004. Before that I was more focused on classical music - I'm actually a classical singer. I started writing lyrics and made up some melodies for those on a cheap keyboard I got at a fleamarket. Later on, Szary from Modeselektor hooked me up with some plug-ins and sounds and samples, and I bought my first music software. That's how it started to get electronic...

  sascha funke/larsson
where is my tent/off voices
(bpitch control)
8/10

While Sascha Funke's track sounds like a glitch-techno remix of the last ten seconds of a Slowdive song, Larsson's is more of a gulpy theremin seance. Both come from...
  CORTNEY TIDWELL
DON'T LET THE STARS KEEP US TANGLED UP (EWAN PEARSON REMIX)
(EVER)
9/10

It's probably not often that Nashville country singers meet Worcestershire techno producers, but this rare collision has produced something wondrous. Tidwell's vocal is...

8/10

Howard Devoto holds a pivotal position in UK music history equalled only by John Lydon. Both were founding members of punk pioneers that released seminal records in 1977, Buzzcocks and Sex Pistols respectively. Within a year, both had jumped ship, formed new, more experimental outfits (Magazine and PiL) and went on to define post-punk with...

crippled black phoenix
Co-founded by Mogwai's Donald Aitchison and signed to Invada Records by Portishead's Geoff Barrow, Bristol post-rock collective Crippled Black Phoenix have a lot to live up to, but early seepages from their debut LP A Love of Shared Disasters suggest they won't disappoint. And yes, the cheerfulness of the band name and album title is...

SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO
BUGGED OUT! PRESENTS: SUCK MY DECK
(BUGGED OUT!)
8/10

It’s that whoosh. That sound that slowly builds 43 seconds into JoJo De Freq’s Make Some Noise. That coming-on-strong, head-back, arms-in-the-air sound. That perfect aural distillation of belly tingles and swoony lights. That whoooooosh…

Bugged Out! have come up with the goods yet again, this time with a gloriously twisted electro-disco/new rave offering from Simian Mobile Disco. Why does nu-rave grow and grow? The same reason that old rave did...

  STRIPPED BARE
One thing that the dubstep massive never seem to be shut up about - justifiably, I suppose - is the friendliness and sincerity of their scene. But this weekend, dubstep has been in uproar over a shock business move by Ammunition Promotions (the Shoreditch company that run the holy trinity of record label Tempa, club night FWD, and pirate station Rinse FM). In 2005 an eighteen-year-old Londoner who calls himself Deapoh set up barefiles.com, a site where...
